IB Middle Years, Grades 6 - 10

In the Middle School we are authorised to implement the IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP).

It comprises eight subject groups:

  • Language acquisition
  • Language and literature
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Physical and health education
  • Design

The MYP provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers, who make connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP uses a conceptual approach to teaching and learning and investigates ideas through Global Contexts and the Learner Profile. It fosters the development of skills and qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.

The MYP is student-centered. It is vital that students develop an awareness of their own learning process and the necessary skills to continue learning throughout life. The curriculum seeks to shift the emphasis from teacher-led instruction to student-led learning wherever possible. The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

At the end of Grade 10, our students take the MYP Assessments. This will lead to the award of the MYP Certificate. The government recognises this as as the equivalent to the Mittlere Reife (a German higher level middle school certifate) under certain conditions (see KMK document). If the results do not reach this level students could apply for a Hauptschulabschluss (a German lower level middle school certificate).
